Dries Van Noten spring 2009

A fashion design alumnus from the highly-respected Antwerp's Royal Academy and a third generation in a family of tailors it was only expected that Dries Van Noten would be rocking the fashion world. His collection of both menswear and womenswear are among the ones that set fashion trends, always playing with the mix of masculine and feminine, redefining both.

Identified as an exotic brand in menswear, Dries changed his design philosophy for the latest collection, leaning towards a more understated look with heritage quality. That, filtered through spring 2009 lounge-wear trend and Van Noten's signature androgynous elegance resulted in the image of "a new natty" who is "dapper yet not dandy with a precise sense of flair".

Dries van Noten's spring 2009 collection revealed in an energetic surroundings (a white carpark setting and an 80's synthpop soundtrack) gathered tailored, sophisticated, smooth silhouettes with innovative details.

There were shirts and jackets with delicate peter-pan or shawl collars, suits cut from micro-printed silk, shirts and coats made from sheer, fluid fabrics such as a flimsy nylon raincoat or a silky "bath-robe" overcoat, high-waist, ankle-grazing trousers and pyjamas-like matching shirt and pants with elasticized waist.

As for colour, along with classic neutrals, there were also soft pastels such as a pale salmon pink or a refreshing sky blue. Except for a pair of patterned shorts that looked like boxer shorts, really, the entire collection exuded modern refinement.
