LOST IN THE SUPERMARKET
A NEW SOLO EXHIBITION BY BEN FROST
OPENING THURSDAY NOVEMBER 26TH, 6 -8 PM
We are all Lost in the Supermarket
and we don’t even know it.
For the first time in three years, Ben Frost unleashes his visual delight that is mental torture, on Sydney. Recently returned from his second solo show in New York following exhibitions in London, Berlin, Amsterdam, Singapore, Beijing and San Francisco, Lost in the Supermarket embodies a solidification of the culturally confrontational and wildly irrepressible identity he has garnered over the last decade. Now represented for the first time in Australia by a commercial gallery, Boutwell Draper in Redfern, Frost finds himself resting, even just for a moment, amongst a stable of distinctive and well-established international artists. This latest move signifying a leap of recognition in this country, from low-brow art rock star to vital sub-cultural art figure. Ben Frost carries a lusty allegiance amongst his fans, with the enviable ability to tweak the vibe wire and entice the people, silent Pied Piper style, into his world of kaleidoscopic neo pop violence. His recent appearance on the Australian version of US reality series The Apprentice, saw him draw a larger crowd to see his work than any of the other exhibiting artists on the show. Well of course he did, he’s Ben Frost. In an ironic twist tied carefully between concept and reality, Frost has refined this ability to hypnotise his audience into a world of ferociously poignant assault. A background in performance art would explain this, with his existence within the visual art world becoming one all-encompassing, and frighteningly clever, performance piece that we find ourselves within. Lost in the Supermarket, a reference to The Clash song, remarks on the over stimulation, confusion and daily hypnosis we are trapped by, as we struggle to stand still on a buzzing psychedelic landscape of brands, identities and social demands. This is an exhibition of works that both comforts and confronts, as you slide through the hyper reality of Ben Frost’s world and come out the other side dusting off the sensory debris of your over crowded daily life. __ Ben Frost has exhibited extensively throughout Europe, the United States and Australia. His work is held in multiple private collections internationally, including television executive Kerry Stokes, as well as public collections including Artbank. He is the co-founder of the online art portal stupidkrap.com, and was a guest speaker at the 2008 Semi-Permanent and AG IDEAS conferences in Australia. Ben currently lives in Sydney and operates ‘Worlds End Studio’, in Surry Hills. |

Exhibition continues until December 17th.

I just turned 35. It’s a landmark year not just chronologically, but style wise. I am now approaching that next age bracket in the How to Dress for Your Age features in mags. You know the ones. There’s something about the fall season that brings both calming and chaotic feelings. As we kiss our wild summer nights goodbye, we say hello to late night study sessions and longer days in the office. As New York Fashion Week closes and we’re trying to catch up on the latest collections, London Fashion Week kicks off. This week’s round up of Links à la Mode from Independent Fashion Bloggers embodies a little bit of everything in an effort to give you a breather in between the deceiving calm that comes with fall. We’ve got runway reviewes ranging from Fashion Pulse’s take on Tory Burch to Fasshonaburu’s humorous experience at the Snuggie fashion show, and Style Amour rated the top five most disappointing Spring 2010 collections. There are also a few new DIY’s worth checking out, especially the Maison Michael bunny ears post from Monoxious. Last but not least, make sure you check out Ashe Mischief’s scando-style post on Sarah Von of Yes and Yes on Dramatis Personae.

The Immoralist:::I LOST MY HEAD THE DAY I FOUND MY HEART
In London Fashion Week, fashion on September 24, 2009 at 2:37 amYou may recall my previous article on THE IMMORALIST collaboration between Firetrap and London’s ‘cult couturier’ Ziad Ghanem for Spring/Summer 2010.
I’ve just received these amazing images of the seven-piece capsule range which celebrates a festival of colour, texture and form, shiny futuristic metallics which are juxtaposed against 3D shapes and easy-to-wear fabrics, creating pieces full of wit and character.
As mentioned in the previous article, THE IMMORALIST was inspired by the Andre Gide novel (of the same name) and takes in a myriad of references from Hollywood’s glamorous Golden Age, to London’s multi-cultural mix.
“It’s the American Dream turned into a British Reality.”
– Ziad Ghanem
From Pop Art to Fast Food, the positivity of post-war 1950s America is the inspiration behind the collection, reflecting on the era of youthful optimism and a future full of promise.
The capsule range is due for exhibition within City Hall before going under auction in support of The Mayor’s Fund for London.

Robyn Black – Fitzroy’s Best Kept Secret!
In independent fashion design, womenswear on September 16, 2009 at 4:48 amTucked away in her sunny Fitzroy studio, Melbourne womenswear designer ROBYN BLACK works tirelessly creating impeccable + cutting edge collections.
New Zealand born and raised, Robyn Black moved to Australia in 1998 and it wasn’t long before Robyn began her eponymous label, ROBYN BLACK. Her work is coveted by many Melbourne women who have discovered her signature aesthetic and like myself, have instantly fallen in love!
The Robyn Black aesthetic has been described as being truly ‘Melbourne’ and I also have to agree. Her palette usually consists of blacks + pure whites as a backdrop to exquisite soft colours and textures, and she is most definitely ahead of her time.
Currently, the Robyn Black label is sold exclusively @ The Signet Bureau boutique, 165 Gertrude Street, Fitzroy 3065 {+61 39415 7470} Australia.
I will be featuring an interview with her in our upcoming issue of TFB, (out 1st October), so stay tuned

THE IMMORALIST Transforms Firetrap’s Denim with Ziad Ghanem’s MAIDEN BRITAIN
In Campaigns, London Fashion Week, events, fashion on September 9, 2009 at 2:36 amZIAD GHANEM & MAIDEN BRITAIN collaboration with FIRETRAP presents THE IMMORALIST …
FIRETRAP’s brand of London-ism reflects the capital’s street culture and distinct eclectic sense of style and is reflected in their desire to collaborate with an established London based independent designer to create a capsule collection scheduled to be shown as part of September’s LONDON FASHION WEEK.
Their choice: avant garde cult couturier ZIAD GHANEM was invited to collaborate with them with his Ready To Wear line, MAIDEN BRITAIN for Spring/Summer 2010.
Entitled THE IMMORALIST (after Gide’s novel), Ziad Ghanem brings into the mix his recycle/redesign aesthetic to Firetrap’s denim line in order to create a capsule range of 7 pieces … transforming denim ito distinctively individual pieces, yet remaining true to Firetrap’s collection + feel.
THE IMMORALIST will be unveiled as part of Vauxhall Fashion Scout at September’s London Fashion Week. The 7 pieces will then go on to be exhibited within the fantastic City Hall before going under auction in support of MAYOR’s FUND FOR LONDON. This charity was set up earlier this year to improve opportunities + aspirations of disadvantaged children and young people in London – nearly half of which are living in poverty. Both Firetrap + Ziad Ghanem felt that it made sense to show their support by becoming involved and encouraging others to do the same. They hope to not only provide financial support to the Fund, but they also wish to inspire young people across London.
If you’re also interested in supporting the MAYOR’s FUND FOR LONDON by donations for the charity, you can get more information @ http://mayorsfundforlondon.org.uk.

bibiGHOST shows us The Secret Garden …
In Copenhagen Fashion Week, fashion, womenswear on September 4, 2009 at 7:13 amBibi Ghost presents her 4th collection @ Copenhagen Fashion Week. With it’s delicately gothic flavour, this range was shown in a garden behind Carl Jacobsens villa …
The SS10 collection, titled ”The Secret Garden” – is an enchanted place, hidden beneath the surface of the city where good meets evil and where the line between reality and fantasy and magical is blurred forever.
The stark military aesthetic references the restricted life @ the Russian court, contrasting with soft organic dream-like feel of the sleek materials used, which possess a lustrous, glossy surface which is accompanied by fabrics with a matte finish.

*Liria Pristine, Rebel With A Cause
In Jewellery, fashion, menswear, womenswear on August 27, 2009 at 7:28 amCanadian born knitwear designer LIRIA PRISTINE has been based in London for the last 6 years. While living in Geneva, Switzerland her weekend trips to London inspired her to make the move there as she discovered it’s thriving music scene and rich cosmopolitan culture.
It was whilst she was in London that she discovered her love of textiles, colour and structure from her association with many artistic friends.
After graduating from Central Saint Martins, Liria began work with musician Patrick Wolf and singer/songwriter Serafina Steer. Being a big fan of both, she found a strong connection between her creative designs and her love of music. Pristine dressed Patrick Wolf for the DVD of his gigs at Shepherds Bush Empire and is working with him on some styling for Harpist Serafina Steer.
Liria’s restless spirit and exploring nature led her to do some work at Floreal Knitwear Ltd., the largest and oldest knitwear manufacturer in Mauritius Island. It was there that she received intense training throughout the company, participated in meetings for design projects, and was given the opportunity to design and produce a small in-house collection.
Pristine’s BA Collection from Central Saint Martins went on to the CSM Press Show 2007 and was later commended by Hilary Alexander in the Telegraph and featured in i-D magazine, claiming her to be part of the ‘new breed of wool toting rebels.’
Several pieces from her collection were selected to be exhibited in Alexandra Palace as part of the Knitted Textile Student Awards.
Liria Pristine has worked for Bora Aksu, Rubecksen Yamanaka and has done freelance work for menswear designer Deryck Walker.
Pristine has also been involved with fashion events put on at London’s Hoxton Boutique and Sketch Bar’s, The Parlour. She has recently launched a beautifully crafted accessories label, PristineSmut, collaborating with a jewellery designer to combine knitted structures and metalwork.
